Synopsis:
Sacred Games is an Indian neo-noir crime thriller streaming television series based on Vikram Chandra‘s 2006 novel of the same name. India’s first Netflix original series, it was produced and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap as Phantom Films. The novel was adapted by Varun Grover, Smita Singh, and Vasant Nath. Kelly Luegenbiehl, Erik Barmack and Motwane were the series’ executive producers.
Vivek’s experience:
Sacred Games was Netflix’s first Indian series so going in, there was a lot of excitement and apprehension. As Executive producer, my job was to control costs, budgets and timlelines.
When the initial breakdown was made, it was clear that the show could not be made in the budgets we had so I suggested the show be shot by two separate directors based on their strengths, which proved to be the right way to go. It is still considered one of the best shows to be made in India.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, being the fabulous actor that he is, jumped into the character of Gaitonde with absolutely no rehearsals before shoot as he wanted to bring in as much spontaneity to his character as possible.
Saif got deep into his character, rehearsing judiciously to perfectly portray the now iconic Sartaj Singh.
